LAUREN SANTO DOMINGO
MDS- How would you define your style?
LSD- I like to think that I’m both exacting and spontaneous at the same time. I enjoy the process of selecting, tailoring and maintaining my wardrobe so when it comes time to getting dressed I need to only consider my mood and the weather. Mind you, these two variables are equally unpredictable.
MDS- Where did you grow up and how do you think that has influenced your style?
LSD- I grew up in Old Greenwich, an understated and close-knit coastal hamlet of Greenwich, CT. Or at least it was when I was growing up. I wore a uniform at Greenwich Academy, and when I moved on to boarding school at Kent I had a strict dress code. Needless to say, many demerits were issued and Discipline Committees were held in the evolution of my personal style.
MDS- Who or what is inspiring you right now?
LSD- I am inspired mostly by generations before mine. Women like Annette de la Renta, Deeda Blair, Jayne Wrightsman, Marella Agnelli. They seem to live with a style that is uniquely their own. Style that was developed over time, with a unique character and charisma. Style that is deeply personal and not a commodity purchased for them by an interior designer, art consultant or fashion stylist. I strongly believe that that the biggest mistake one can make in life is to listen too much to other people. Besides, those ladies had the best jewels.
MDS- What is the favorite room in your home?
LSD- I’m moving house in a few months. Check back with me then.
MDS- Is there anything you obsessively collect?
LSD- I am too fickle to start one collection. My tastes and interests change far too quickly. Besides, as I am incapable of doing anything in moderation: A ‘collection’ could quickly become out-of-control and very expensive.
MDS- Fill in the blank: “I could never own too many _________”
LSD- “I could never own too many minaudieres”
MDS- Who are your style icons? Who is in your best-dressed hall of fame?
LSD- Jayne Wrightsman is perfect in my estimation.
MDS- What do you want to be known for?
LSD- I would most like to be remembered by my family and friends as a loving grand-mother and hopefully great-grandmother. And also, before I die, for having achieved the perfect shade of blonde.
MDS- What’s next for The LSD?
LSD- It is impossible for me to think much further than FW14, which is the season being presented right now on catwalks in Paris and currently being offered for preorder on Moda Operandi (shop here) . It seems that orange is the new pink, in case you were wondering.
MDS- What do you think is chic, glamorous and stylish?
LSD- Gratitude
LAUREN SANTO DOMINGO CONTINUED
MDS- Currently, What is your favorite Color?
LSD- Lilac, in theory. Cornflower blue, in practice.
MDS- What is your favorite Flower?
LSD- For the fragrance, i love jasmine, hyacinth, lavender. In arrangements, I love narcissus in a silver tub, mimosas in a wicker basket, poppies in chinese porcelain, tulips in ceramic vases. To plant: delphinium, snap dragon, and poppies.
MDS- What is your favorite Book?
LSD- I could never choose just one. I am mainly drawn to female protagonists that are strong, beautiful and seductive, reckless, selfish and spoiled; complete with all the flaws and ennui that make people interesting. But, since you asked, here are a few of my favorites: Dominique Francon in The Fountain Head, Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind , Blaire in Less than Zero, Lady Brett Ashley in The Sun Also Rises and the legendary Lily Bart and Undine Spragg in Edith Wharton’s House of Mirth and Custom of the Country, respectively.
MDS- What is your favorite Restaurant?
LSD- Momofuku Ko
MDS- What is your favorite Gift to give or to receive?
LSD- I prefer to both give and receive gifts that have been carefully and painstakingly chosen by me.
MDS- Who is your favorite Artist?
LSD- I’m into Surrealists, like Magritte and Dali, and modern artists like Kline, Rothko, Motherwell, Soulages. I can’t get enough of the great portrait painters too like Boldini, Sargent, Gainsbourough; even the Dutch Tronies are endlessly fascinating. I have yet to be seduced by what is often referred to as Contemporary Art, and I doubt Never will. I’m quite old-fashioned in many ways?
MDS- What is your favorite Indulgence?
LSD- Books. My Kindle is the second most underused appliance in my house after my hairdryer.
MDS- What is your favorite Store?
LSD- JAR, Paris.
MDS- What is your favorite vacation spot?
LSD- Cartagena, Colombia.
